This month, JET Effect has spoken to Anthony Swain, a 5th year ALT from Saga City who has a passion for one particular aspect of Japanese culture.

We asked Anthony to tell us about his serious committment to karate. ‘Since August 2006, I have been training and helping out at the“古賀英語道場” (Koga Eigo Dojo). The dojo was founded by Koga Takeo Sensei (1950-2008) and not only do people practice karate there, but there is also an English school and it is the host to the 地球市民の会 (Terra People Association). I practice/assist in teaching karate at the dojo and sometimes volunteer at the English events.’

Oct 2010 JET EffectThis month JET Effect is focusing on a successful JET musical that has been running for many years. Lisa Marie Cross from Kamojima has some great advice for any of those interested in starting something similar in their area.

The musical is produced and performed in Lisa’s prefecture of Tokushima and some serious dedication is expected to make the project work. Lisa states ‘the musical starts from January to March. We perform 5 times at different theatres throughout the prefecture. We have always tried to space them out so that there is at least one show that is a reasonable commute for our Japanese audience.’

AJET Games Touch Rugby Tournament

AJET Games Touch Rugby TournamentThis month, JET Effect is talking to Jeff Oloizia, a Tokushima 3rd year ALT who helps run one of the most well established JET events of the year. Jeff is in charge of the annual Eishinsha Cup AJET Games Touch Rugby Tournament which held its 7th annual tournament this year.

The tournament takes place each year at the Shikoku Saburo no Sato in Mima City, Tokushima-ken. ‘It is a wonderful venue’ Jeff comments, ‘located by the Yoshino River, it has picturesque mountains overlooking the fields and enough cabins and tent spaces to accomodate over 200 participants.’

Advice from an Experienced Council Member

MartyAs a new JET year approaches, and the new AJET council are finding their feet, we thought we would take the time to ask one of our longest-serving council members about what exactly AJET does for you!

Martin Nash is based in a small village in the south of Nara, and hails originally from Seattle. This is his 3rd year on the national council and he has a wealth of experience under his belt. Starting two years ago as the webmaster, Martin is currently serving his second year as the national council treasurer.

Starting a Jazz Dance Club

Dana Berte, a 3rd year CIR from Tsugaru City in Aomori Prefecture loves dancing. In fact, her favourite part of American culture is dancing. When she arrived in Japan, she immediately started inquiring about teaching a dance class, in order to share her hobby with people who otherwise might not be interested in typical “international understanding” activities. It took some prodding, but once her office agreed, it grew into an extracurricular club with 5 regular members.

Takumi’s Heart

Takumi’s Heart began on March 8 when Takumi couldn’t afford to go to the doctor. Fourth year JET Theo Thourson, Arida City, Wakayama Prefecture, decided that his 24 year-old friend Takumi should never again be denied health care because he couldn’t afford it. That evening, Theo registered the Takumi’s Heart domain name and created the website and accompanying materials. Since then donations have been trickling in.
