Block 1: Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku

Block 1 is made up of Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita and Iwate prefectures. They are four prefectures located in the northern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu and the island of Hokkaido. Three of these four prefectures are collectively known as the Tohoku region and have a distinct culture and history from the rest of Japan. The region is known for its winters, which bring heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, but also for its beautiful autumn foliage and delicious local cuisine, including seafood and rice dishes.
