Regional AJET Blocks

All JETs are represented through Blocks, groups of prefectures that together elect one Block Representative to the AJET National Council.

Block 1: Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku

Block 1 covers Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate and Akita, at the northern end of Japan. The region is known for long snowy winters, big summer festivals, and some of the best seafood and rice in the country.

Block 2: Southern Tohoku and Tochigi

Block 2 brings together Miyagi, Yamagata, Fukushima and Tochigi. It stretches from the Pacific coast at Sendai, through the mountains and hot springs of the interior, down to Nikko.

Block 3: The Central Highlands and Snow Country

Block 3 is made up of Niigata, Gunma and Nagano. These three sit along Japan’s mountainous spine and are known for heavy winter snowfall, ski resorts, onsen towns and sake.

Block 4: Greater Tokyo

Block 4 is the largest block, covering Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Yamanashi. It runs from the Pacific beaches of Chiba through the capital and out to Mount Fuji and the vineyards of Yamanashi.

Block 5: Tokai

Block 5 covers the Tokai region: Shizuoka, Gifu, Aichi and Mie. Green tea fields, the old post towns of the Nakasendo, Nagoya’s food scene and the shrines of Ise are all here.

Block 6: Hokuriku

Block 6 is Hokuriku: Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui. Facing the Sea of Japan and backed by the Northern Alps, the region is known for seafood, traditional crafts and the castle town of Kanazawa.

Block 7: Kansai

Block 7 takes in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Wakayama and Shiga. This is the historic heart of Japan, home to former capitals, the Kumano pilgrimage routes and Lake Biwa.

Block 8: Hyogo and Eastern Chugoku

Block 8 covers Hyogo, Okayama and Tottori. It reaches from the Seto Inland Sea to the Sea of Japan, taking in Himeji Castle, Okayama’s Korakuen garden and the Tottori sand dunes.

Block 9: Shikoku

Block 9 is the island of Shikoku: Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime and Kochi. It is best known for the 88 Temple Pilgrimage, the Awa Odori dance festival, Dogo Onsen and Sanuki udon.

Block 10: Western Chugoku

Block 10 is made up of Shimane, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi. The region spans both coasts of western Honshu and includes Izumo Taisha, Miyajima and the Akiyoshido caves.

Block 11: Northern Kyushu

Block 11 covers Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Oita. Expect tonkotsu ramen and yatai stalls in Fukuoka, pottery towns in Saga, Nagasaki’s trading history and the hot springs of Beppu.

Block 12: Southern Kyushu and Okinawa

Block 12 is home to Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Okinawa. This is Japan’s warmest corner, with active volcanoes, subtropical islands, and the distinct culture and language of the Ryukyus.
