In 2025, AJET is running a series of professional learning seminars aimed at supporting newly arrived and current ALTs as they transition into a teaching role. These series are as a result of feedback from JETs in the 2023 Opinion Exchange Survey that indicated a need for further professional development.

This seminar focused on:
Showcasing high-quality Self-Introduction Presentation methods, activities and game ideas. 3 senpai ALTs showcased examples of their own Self-Introductions, with each bringing their own flavor. Presenters encouraged participants to utilise short videos, quizzes, games and connecting to students’ own interests and experiences.

This seminar was run by Kurtis Carter, Co-Director of Educational & Professional Learning. Kurtis worked in Australia as a secondary teacher for over 5 years. In that time, he developed strong skills in classroom management and has taken on supervising teacher roles and leadership positions – supporting undergraduate students of education to complete their teaching internships.

Nikki Regina Cruz is a highly experienced educator with over ten years of experience teaching English as an Additional Language in the Philippines. Nikki has a keen attention to detail and has played a large role in the orientation of new ALTs and the implementation of a city-wide English Newsletter.

Michealea Lemons is a third-year ALT placed in Gojome, Akita and hails from Washington State in the US. She also serves as the current Executive Director of Charity Akita, a local non-profit that brings locals and foreigners together in the Akita prefecture. She hopes to build a strong community for JETs across the prefectures within her block and welcomes any ideas and support!

Kavita Singh is a second-year ALT based in Kyoto city. Originally from Malaysia and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, she spent over five years in community and youth development, learning that building and sustaining meaningful connections are key to a thriving community and that snacks solve more problems than you’d think.
